What's the real difference between custom, semi-custom, and stock cabinets?

This is probably the first question I get from folks, and it's a good one, too, since it directly impacts your budget and how long you'll be without a kitchen. Stock cabinets are your basic, off-the-shelf options. They come in standard sizes, with limited finishes, and you either pick them up or we deliver them. They're definitely the most affordable and quickest to get your hands on. Think of them like buying a suit off the rack – it might fit okay, but it won't be perfect, will it?

Semi-custom cabinets give you a lot more flexibility. You're still working with standard box sizes, sure, but you get more choices in door styles, finishes, and some internal accessories. Often, you can adjust widths a bit or add decorative elements. It's like getting that suit tailored just for you – a better fit, more style. They cost more than stock cabinets and take longer to order, usually a few weeks.

Custom cabinets, on the other hand, are built specifically for your kitchen, to your exact specifications. Every dimension, every finish, every storage solution gets designed for your space. This is where you can truly make the most of awkward corners, get unique sizes for specific appliances, or match a very particular aesthetic you've got in mind. They're the most expensive and take the longest – often 8-12 weeks, sometimes more, depending on how complex the design is and what materials you pick. But the fit and finish? Unbeatable. For a lot of the older homes up in the hills around Ventura, with their unique layouts, custom is often the only way to go if you really want to maximize the space.

How long does cabinet installation actually take?

Once the cabinets arrive, the actual installation time can really vary. For a typical kitchen remodel with semi-custom or custom cabinets, I usually tell people to plan for 3 to 5 full days of installation. This isn't just slapping boxes on the wall, you know; it involves careful leveling, shimming, securing everything, installing doors and drawers, and often adding trim and hardware. If you've got a very small kitchen with stock cabinets, it might be quicker, maybe 2 days. A large, complex kitchen with lots of custom features, intricate molding, or an island could easily push it to a week or more. We take our time to make sure everything is perfectly plumb and level, because you'll notice every little imperfection once the countertops go on, believe me.
